Object: Snider-Enfield Rifle with Bayonet

Period: Converted from Pattern 1853 muzzle-loaders starting in 1866 using the American-patented hinged breechblock mechanism designed by Jacob Snider.

This rifle represents a crucial technological bridge in 19th-century military history, marking the transition from muzzle-loading arms to modern breech-loaders by utilizing self-contained metallic centerfire cartridges. This representative example recalls the arms carried by Canadian forces during early conflicts and campaigns, including the North-West Rebellion.
